Clinical performance evaluation of Thermo Scientific™ VersaTREK™ 528 Blood Culture System in a Chinese tertiary hospital

Dr. Qiwen Yang, Peking Union Medical College Hospital

Getting sufficient blood volume to capture enough bacteria/fungi is key for successful blood culture results, yet in reality can be challenging. This study evaluated the performance of the VersaTREK 528 system with suboptimal seeded conditions (10 CFU/bottle) for clinical specimen inoculation (5ml/bottle of blood inoculation in one set experiment).

Benefits of molecular testing in UTI investigations: comparing culture with real-time PCR detection, study outcomes

Nitin Puri, Senior Product Manager

A more comprehensive panel-based assay presents significant advantages for effective treatment, especially in urinary tract pathogens where cases often consist of complex polymicrobial infections that are commonly misclassified using traditional urine culture. Missing one causative pathogenic organism can affect treatment of other organisms. In this presentation, we will discuss how polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for pathogen identification and resistance testing improves patient outcomes.

Multiplex screening of respiratory track pathogens via real-time PCR Microfluidics Cards

Nitin Puri, Senior Product Manager

Globally, respiratory investigations are one of the most commonly performed routine pathogen detection tests in laboratories. While infections caused by single pathogens are often detected easily, coinfections with multiple agents have been reported and will be missed by the commonly available tests. In this presentation, we will discuss a novel application for profiling respiratory tract pathogenic agents developed on microfluidic and nanofluidic real-time PCR cards. These comprehensive and customizable panels enable labs to investigate all respiratory pathogens of interest simultaneously in a single sample.

Sunday, 14 April 13:10 - 13:25

Utility of syndromic molecular panels for infectious disease testing

Partha Das, Director, Clinical

With the development of novel PCR-based syndromic panels for the rapid detection of pathogens, physicians now have the option of ordering a single test designed to detect multiple organisms associated with an infectious syndrome. This has resulted in a paradigm shift in clinical microbiology and clinical practice. In this presentation, we will speak about the advantages of a rapid turnaround time and the detection of a large number of microorganisms as well as the challenges like test utilization strategies and interpretation.

Importance of determining true MIC by BMD (Sensititre) in infectious disease management

Dr. François Gravey, Service de bactériologie CHU Caen- Université Caen Normandie

The success of the management of bacterial infections depends on two main factors. First, the precocity of the diagnostic, and once bacteria are identified, the determination of their antimicrobial susceptibility. This presentation will discuss how the Hospital of Caen, Normandy University overcame the limitations of some widely used AST methods by utilizing broth microdilution (BMD) and obtaining accurate MIC results with Sensititre custom plates.

The importance of quantitation and breadth in vaginal microbiota investigations using real-time PCR

Evan Diamond, Associate Director, Global Market Development

Abnormal vaginal discharge is the most common gynecological condition for physician office visits. Standard protocol for diagnosing BV includes clinical criteria, microscopy and culture. Unfortunately, routine tests including culture of genital specimen reveals only part of the vaginal microbiota. Since different vaginal species can be part of the normal vaginal microbiota, quantification is necessary to improve accuracy of diagnosis of BV. In this presentation, we will speak about the advantages of PCR-based tests for reproducible and standardized vaginal microbiota testing that does not depend on subjective interpretation.
